Student refund disbursement is the process colleges use to return credit-balance refunds to students — for example, when financial aid exceeds charges or a student drops a class.
Herring Bank's Student Refund Account Choice modernizes that process by letting students decide how they want to receive their refund, while giving your business office a faster, lower-cost alternative to printing and mailing paper checks. Students choose a refund method directly in the student portal, which Herring Bank can integrate with, or — for smaller schools without an integration budget — through a no-integration-required option that still offers student choice. Students who don't already have a bank account can open a Herring Bank student account within the same flow, supported by our bank-grade Student Identity Verification, so unbanked students can still receive refunds electronically. And if a student never makes a selection, Herring Bank automatically mails a check on the school's behalf, so no refund is left unprocessed. The solution is built around Department of Education refund requirements, helping your institution stay compliant while reducing the manual workload and cost of disbursing student refunds each term.
